Merlion : Postcard from Singapore

merlion-8

Greetings from Singapore! It took me a long twenty-hour journey to finally get here, but this world class city sure makes the trip worth it. For those of you wondering why I’m wearing shorts in December, it’s because Singapore is virtually seasonless. There’s only one season here: summer. So instead of having a White Christmas this year, I’ll be having a scorching hot one.

The Riverside is Singapore’s tourist hub. Here you can get a spectacular view of the Singapore River, the skyline, and the iconic Merlion fountain. The Merlion is a half-lion half-fish creature that is the mascot of Singapore. There are several Merlion statues scattered over Singapore, but the one on Riverside is the most renowned.

The Merlion obviously has a special meaning to Singaporeans, but it also has a special meaning to me and my family as well. This same month 20 years ago in 1993, I was in Singapore to apply for my immigration from Hong Kong to Canada. We had to do this in Singapore because the volume of immigration applications in Hong Kong was far too high in the early 1990s. We stayed almost a week in Singapore to accomplish this, and our favourite photo from this “trip” was me in front of the Merlion fountain. Shortly after this last visit to Singapore, I moved to Canada and that’s how life as I know it began. So in commemoration of all of this, I decided to recreate my photo with the Merlion. My Mom was thrilled when I sent it to her! Twenty years is a very long time, and it’s heartwarming to know that there are some people who have been with me all the way through it.
